Chip seal is the original paving style. If you’ve spent any time on old country roads, you might already be familiar with its look.
The look can vary from polished to very rustic depending on the type of gravel used as the chip, which forms the top layer.
A base layer of hot liquid asphalt is applied to the prepared surface, and then stone is applied and rolled into the asphalt. What makes this paving style unique is the many different looks available depending on stone choice. A few of the options include, granite, slate and river rock.
The lighter stone colors also absorb less heat making for a cooler surface than asphalt alone.
The embedded stones also provide excellent traction on slopes and high moisture areas. Chip seal is commonly used in rural areas for its natural look and high durability.
Asphalt surfaces provide an almost unlimited variety in form and flexibility and can last as long as 25 years, offering excellent long term value. Its flexibility makes it perfect for areas that would not be appropriate for concrete or other surfaces such as steep incline areas. It also performs very well in cold weather environments, resisting cracking.
The look is smooth and modern. The benefits of asphalt include trip free surfaces, reduced dust, and excellent waterproofing properties.
Unlike chip seal, asphalt does tend to get very hot in summer due to the heat-absorbing properties of the dark pavement color.
Asphalt surfaces work well in both residential and commercial applications. It is appropriate for new construction, remodeling and patching of existing surfaces.
